About

The challenge

Despite significant investment in South Africa’s education system, overall student performance has not improved.

Most children leave Grade One without knowing the alphabet, while 82% of Grade 4 children cannot read for meaning.

Unequal access to quality education for South Africa’s historically under-resourced communities reflects in student results with a lower proportion of historically disadvantaged students obtaining post high school qualifications.

Although South Africa’s matric pass rate has improved slightly, it does not take into account the significant drop out rate of 32.7% between Grades 10 and 12. Only one third of matric students qualify to attend university highlighting the gap between what the basic education system produces and what the higher education system expects. Even fewer students pass with the marks necessary to study in maths and science intensive fields.

How do we change this?

We believe that school leaders play a central role in changing this narrative and have developed a sustainable school leadership development model that ensures that the school principal and school management team (SMT) are focused on improving the quality of teaching and learning (instruction) in their schools. This leadership development model does not require the extended presence of ILI in the school to be successful and is sustainable because teachers and leaders are left with skills and knowledge that allows them to continuously improve.

Vision

Our vision is to see a South African education system where school leaders and teachers have unlocked the enormous potential of students and provided them with a globally competitive education.

Mission

Our mission is to provide training, coaching and mentoring from local experts using a rigorous practice-based approach that focuses on improving the quality of teaching and learning in schools. These practices are deeply ingrained into school systems through differentiated approaches that acknowledge and accommodate each school’s unique context.

ILI’s journey

Drawing inspiration from successful international models, we have tailored our programmes to the South African context, recognising the nuances of our diverse cultural and social landscapes.

ILI’s transition into an independent entity marked the birth of our adaptive model, born in the heart of South Africa.

Our journey thus far has equipped us with the expertise and insights needed to contextualise coaching and training to different communities.

Now, positioned to expand into Africa and beyond, our journey is rooted in the successes of our alumni and the impact they have made.
